Frequently Asked Questions
What are the normal school hours?
School begins at 8:30 and dismisses at 3:30. All students are dismissed at this time (unlike the staggered dismissal at some of our Elementary schools).
What are drop off and pick up times for students?
Students may be dropped off in front of the school beginning at 7:45 am. Please pick students by 3:50 each afternoon. These are the times when staff supervision is on duty.
What does my child do from 7:45 until the bell rings?
All students enter the building and report to the North Commons area or gym (8th grade) where they will be seated. Students wanting to eat breakfast will be dismissed at the appropriate time. Band students should take their instruments to the band room upon arrival on campus. Students with a Media Center pass will be dismissed at 8:10 to go to the Media Center when it opens. Students should not be wandering the hallways and should never be on the back hallway where there is no assigned supervision.
What time is breakfast served?
Breakfast is served from 8:05 until 8:25 each morning.
Does NAMS operate a School Store?
No, please purchase school supplies from a local retailer prior to coming to school.
How can I identify NAMS staff members?
All Asheboro City Schools employees (Administration, teachers, staff, custodial, bus drivers) are required to wear their ACS issued name tags while on school property and/or carrying out their school responsibilities.
What safety procedures does NAMS employ concerning visitors at school?
All NAMS visitors should enter the school through the front door of the school and report directly to the school office. All visitors will be given a printed badge from our Ident-A-Kid system including the visitor's name, picture, and location they are permitted to be in while visiting NAMS. No one without the proper credentials should be in a classroom area. Violations of this policy will be handled by the School Administration and our School Resource Officer.
Where do the school buses load and unload?
Buses load and unload in the south parking lot past the front of the school (students will enter the building in through the “South Commons”). As a safety concern, we ask that no motor vehicles be in this area from 8:00-8:30 and 3:10-3:40 each day.
Can a 6th grader participate in NAMS athletics?
No. There are guidelines set by the State of North Carolina that prohibit 6th graders from participating in interscholastic athletic events.
How do I try out for a sport at NAMS?
Tryouts are held for each sport at the beginning of each sport season. Announcements will be made by various means to let students know these dates. All of these tryout dates (once confirmed by the Athletic Director) will be posted on the Athletic page of the NAMS website for parent information and annouced each day leading up to the tryout date. All athletes must have a current physical on file with the school Athletic Director in order to try out. Please see the school’s Athletic webpage for more information.
Can I bring my cell phone and MP3 player to school?
Students should not bring any electronic devices such as these to school for any reason (this includes field trips, special class days, and athletic events). NAMS cannot be responsible for any such items that are lost, stolen, or broken, so do not bring them on campus.
Will my child be assigned a locker?
Yes, all students are assigned a locker at the beginning of school. Each locker has a combination lock built into the locker door. There is a lock rental fee of $1.00 paid at the beginning of each school year.
What should I do if my child is having trouble in one of their classes?
You should always have a dialog with that classroom teacher first. Most problems are resolved on this level. If you feel the problem has not resolved to your satisfaction, please contact the Principal or Assistant Principal for their assistance.
My child is having a problem with another child. What should I do?
Where the problem is occurring determines how it should be handled. If the problem is only occurring in a single classroom, you should start with that classroom teacher. If the problem is happening in multiple of locations at school, please contact one of our administrators and they will be able to direct you to the proper source for solving the conflict.
How can I find out if school is canceled or delayed for bad weather?
One of the easiest ways is to check the school website. As soon as the information is received, it will be posted on the announcement crawl on the home page. It will also be available on the ACS Homepage, local television stations WFMY-TV2 and FOX 8. Local radio station WKXR (1260AM) will also be notified of the cancelation. Information about a late start or early closing will also be available at each of these outlets.
